Environmental advocates and sustainability enthusiasts are preparing for the largest Earth Day celebration in North Carolina.

Thousands of people are expected to attend the Piedmont Environmental Alliance’s annual Earth Day Fair at the Winston-Salem Fair Grounds April 18. A host of educational booths, food trucks and live music will bring people together to learn about ways to promote sustainability in their own lives.

Jamie Maier, executive director of the Piedmont Environmental Alliance, said there is a little something for everyone at the fair.

"The Earth Day Fair is this incredible, huge festival where we get thousands of people together to come learn from over 115 exhibitors, to learn through demonstrations and programs, to do kids' activities and crafts," Maier explained.

Booths will provide education on a variety of topics, from pollinator gardens to solar panels and anything in between. Admission is free and open to the public, rain or shine.

Maier noted the Earth Day fair aims to support the fight against climate change and bring awareness to ongoing sustainability efforts.

"We need our earth to live, and it brings us joy and happiness and togetherness," Maier emphasized. "When we think about how we can build more sustainable communities and more resilient communities in this time of changing climate and great difficulty, it’s really important to think about building a future that serves our community well."

Other Earth Day events will take place throughout the Tar Heel State on Saturday, including the Earth Day Jam in Salisbury. Earth Day was first celebrated April 22, 1970. It is often considered the birth of the modern environmental movement in the United States.
